Supporting Literacy Through CLSD Funding

The Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) National Literacy Center provides technical assistance to grantees of the U.S. Department of Education's (ED) CLSD program. This program awards discretionary grants to State educational agencies (SEAs) with a focus on enhancing State comprehensive literacy programs to advance literacy skills for children from birth through grade 12. Special emphasis is placed on disadvantaged children, including those living in poverty, English learners, and children with disabilities.

In January 2023, the ED offered current CLSD grantees an opportunity to submit proposals for supplemental funding to expand existing approved grant activities. Eligible entities used this funding to support:

  1. Early childhood education programs
  2. Secondary literacy activities
  3. Evidence-based programs ensuring high-quality comprehensive literacy instruction for students most in need

Watch the video to learn more about CLSD and how grantees used their supplemental funds to improve literacy in their State, particularly addressing the impact of lost instructional time in literacy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
